The One Who Almost Was

The One Who Almost Was

There was a man once — the one who felt genuine.

Not perfect, but almost. The kind you don’t expect to meet after a certain age, when the world has already taken a few bites out of you.

Distance was always the small shadow between us.

But I believed — foolishly or bravely — that distance can be overcome,

as long as the conversation keeps flowing.

And oh, how it flowed in the beginning.

We had so much in common.

Every date was wrapped in respect, kindness, laughter, and that gentle joy you don’t need to explain — the kind you feel in your bones. We shared stories from our lives. We talked late into the night. We messaged through the day. For a while there, it felt simple. Easy. Natural.

Until slowly — it wasn’t.

The chats became fewer.

The silences grew longer.

I gave him space — because real life is hard, and sometimes people need room to breathe. And when he wasn’t in a good space, I cared. I stood beside him from a distance. That’s who I am.

But the ghosting crept in quietly, like a fog rolling over the sea.

I asked for honesty.

I asked for communication.

He promised — if his feelings ever changed — he would be open and straight with me.

But promises are easy when things feel good.

My last three messages were first ignored…

then read…

then finally, hours later, answered with two small words:

“Sleep well.”

And that was it.

Not a conversation.

Not a goodbye.

Just a sentence.

So I made the decision he wouldn’t.

I stopped the reaching out.

I deleted.

I blocked.

Not in anger — but in self-respect.

Because life is too short.

Because I have come too far.

Because my heart deserves someone who shows up, not disappears.

I don’t hate him.

I’m not bitter.

I simply accept that whatever this was — whatever it could have been — ended in silence.

And I am done chasing echoes.

Some chapters don’t need fireworks or final speeches.

Sometimes the closing line is simply:

“I am worth more than uncertainty.”

And I am.
